Books We’re Excited For: “Thrawn Alliances” By Timothy Zahn

For our next release we are excited about, we are delving into our mutual love of Star Wars. While I have not read all of the old books and was a bit unhappy that Disney decided to delete so many from the collective backstory of Star Wars as many authors put a lot of time and love into developing those storylines, I am excited to see them bringing a new novel out to continue our love of Star Wars, especially as it includes one of the most popular characters from the original novels, Thrawn.

As most people know, Thrawn was returned in Star Wars: Rebels the animated series by Disney. Along with that return, we also got the first book in a new trilogy, Star Wars: Thrawn written by Timothy Zahn, an accomplished and experienced science fiction author. The second in the trilogy, Thrawn Alliances, releases today, July 24th.

Zahn is the author of more than forty novels, nearly ninety short stories and novellas, and four short-fiction collections. In 1984, he won the Hugo Award for Best Novella. Zahn is best known for his Star Wars novels (Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, The Last Command, Specter of the Past, Vision of the Future, Survivor’s Quest, Outbound Flight, Allegiance, Choices of One, and Scoundrels), with more than four million copies of his books in print.

With that experience, I know his first book in the trilogy was popular and we look forward to the newest. Anything written by Zahn is excellent. Any fan of Star Wars will likely want to check it out, even if you aren’t certain of all the directions the movies are going in, by all reports, the animated series and the books are much more interesting!

In the latest novel, we have Vader and Thrawn brought together on a mission by Emperor Palpatine. The pair find themselves doubly challenged—by a test of their allegiance to the Empire . . . and an enemy that threatens even their combined might. This gives us a novel that reveals background on both while they were younger and hopefully reveals depths on both personalities. While the focus should rightfully be on Thrawn, it will be interesting to see more of Vader as the new films focus on newer heroes and villains. This gives us a chance to see older characters and get more knowledge on Thrawn himself. If you are interested, remember, Duncan’s Books and More can order the book for you!
