Meet Roger. Skilled with words, languages come easily to him. He instinctively understands how the world works through the power of story.
Meet Dodger, his twin. Numbers are her world, her obsession, her everything. All she understands, she does so through the power of math.
Roger and Dodger aren’t exactly human, though they don’t realise it. They aren’t exactly gods, either. Not entirely. Not yet.
Meet Reed, skilled in the alchemical arts like his progenitor before him. Reed created Dodger and her brother. He’s not their father. Not quite. But he has a plan: to raise the twins to the highest power, to ascend with them and claim their authority as his own.
Godhood is attainable. Pray it isn’t attained.
It is impossible, improbable how masterful this wonder of a story is. It is a story within a story within a story. My brain cannot encapsulate or even put into words the mastery of this novel. But I want to try because if you haven’t read it yet, you need to.
In Middlegame, Seanan McGuire is at the absolute top of her profession. She is a storyteller and she has given us a masterpiece of a story, incorporating all that has come before.
The characters resonate, charm and compel, skipping into your heart like a knife in the dark. The plot is layered and so full of depths, that it may take me years and many rereads before I can grasp all of the themes and wonder that is this book. The pacing is a slow build until it advances to the point where you literally cannot put the book down, having to read to the very end.
It is amazing and frankly, I cannot imagine any other author capable of writing this masterful work of fiction that completely changes the entire genre. It is sublime and transformational. I highly recommend that if you haven’t read this book, you immediately do so. It may be one of the best books I’ve ever read.
