If you haven’t watched this Netflix original, it’s time. It’s one of the funniest takes on zombies that I’ve ever seen. I’m not especially fond of zombies but I am crazy about this show starring Drew Barrymore, Timothy Olyphant, Liv Hewson, and Skylar Gisondo. It is original, it is dynamic, and the comedy gets better each season.
The series is about Joel and Sheila Hammond, an everyday real estate couple living in Santa Clarita, California. In season one, Sheila gets sick and transforms into a zombie. The family handles a series of obstacles as deal with her desire for human flesh. With Joel, their daughter, Abby and the teenage neighbor, Eric, they try to help Sheila through interfering neighbors, cultural norms and getting to the bottom of a potentially mythological mystery.
Season 3 centers on the repercussions of the previous season: Abby blowing up a Fracking site, the discovery of Sheila and Joel by their neighbor Ann, The Knights of Serbia and additional people being transformed into zombies. The family must deal with all this and in addition, Joel must come to a decision, whether he wishes to join his wife in living forever or pass on all the messy details of being a zombie. They even have an encounter with the Serbian consulate. But will they survive all the challenges that come their way?
The absolute best element of this show is the comedy, the humor that both the writers and the actors infuse into every scene. There are serious moments, dramatic moments but it is the humor that drives the story. Every joke emerges from the situation that Sheila finds herself in because of becoming a zombie and because her family loves her enough to support her into some very crazy and messed up situations that are hilarious for the viewer. Season three continues with the laughter, ramping up the jokes, the tension, and the consequences.
Another aspect of the show that makes it so riveting is the characters. All of the characters are unique, quirky, and even the minor characters have backstories and a purpose to the story. Season 3 has some of the best secondary characters of all three seasons. I love the Knights of Serbia as well as the head of the Serbian consulate, played by… I appreciate how much work goes into creating such wonderful people and how much each interaction with one of these characters drives Sheila, Joel, and Abby deeper into bad situations.
The acting is phenomenal. Drew Barrymore is fantastic in a comedic role and having only seen Timothy Olyphant is serious roles, he is a revelation in comedy, showing a supreme talent and matching Drew Barrymore step for step. Liv Hewson is talented, especially with sarcastic humor. She portrays Abby as smart, stubborn and brave, willing to follow her passions and protect her family, even when she fights with her parents. Skylar Giscondo is a match for her, the romantic tension between the pair escalating this season. He is believable as a geek and as funny as the rest of the cast as is Mary Elizabeth Ellis who plays his mother. Even actors who are on the show once do an incredible job which illustrates what a great job the director and writers do.
The entire show is comedy joy and only gets better and better.
I can’t wait to see what happens next if Sheila can continue to evade detection, survive and keep her family out of trouble. If you haven’t seen it, all episodes are available on Netflix.
