Top Ten Movies
The Shape of Water: Best fairytale retelling. This is my absolute favorite because of the fairytale elements combined with a gorgeous romance. The Littlest Mermaid crossed with Creature from the Black Lagoon.
Lego Batman: Laughed the entire movie, new or old Batman fans will love it.
Jumanji: One of the best sequels and one of the most fun films of the year.
War for the Planet of the Apes –Best of the science fiction this year. The action and drama kept me hooked.
Hidden Figures: A true story that combined humor and wisdom to share an unknown story.
Dunkirk: Compelling, historically accurate and superb.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbings, Missouri– Dark humor at its best and Frances McDormand never misses a beat.
The Zookeeper’s Wife-Deeply engrossing, heartbreaking but beautiful.
Wonder Woman: Strong female lead and a compelling story while combining all the elements of Wonder Woman that I love.
Battle of the Sexes: Humor and some of the best acting in a historical retelling. Love the mix of reality and fictionalized storytelling.
And the last spot is a tie: Gifted and The Space Between Us: Both have excellent characters, a compelling character journey and dynamic relationships. I just can’t decide between them and both of them are ones I keep thinking about. The Space Between Us also offers one of the best blends of romance/Sci-fi I’ve seen.
Honorable Mentions: The Last Jedi was one of the best additions to the Star Wars legacy and brought me new hope for the next film. Thor: Ragnorak was fun, adventurous and downright funny, a great cap on the trilogy.
Just as a side note: The Shape of Water, The Battle of the Sexes, Three Billboards and Dunkirk are all nominated for Golden Globes, either for individual acting or the movie itself. This year was filled with great film which made it very difficult for me to pick favorites. All of these are ones, though, if I had time I’d go back and re-watch them. I can’t wait to see what next year will bring us. I think it might be hard to beat.
