The premise of Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass had me interested from the very start and I was hopeful that it would be as funny as it sounded. After watching it, I found it crazy funny, full of raunchy and silly comedy and talented performances by the cast.
Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass is a comedy film directed by David Wain and written by Wain and Ken Marino. In the movie, Gail Daughtry (Zoey Deutch) is a hairdresser super excited to be marrying the love of her life in two weeks until the pair go to a book signing with Jennifer Aniston and her fiance, Tom (Michael Cassidy), sleeps with the actress as his celebrity sex pass. Gail heads off to Los Angeles with her best friend Otto (Miles Gutierrez-Riley)to attend a hairdressing convention. Once there, she is convinced by a psychic to balance the scales by sleeping with her celebrity sex pass, Jon Hamm. Recruiting junior talent agent Caleb (Ben Wang), reporter Vincent (Ken Marino) and John Slattery, Gail and Otto attempt to track down Jon Hamm all while being chased by Ludovica (Sabrina Impacciatore), a criminal wanting to destroy the financial world whose suitcase was accidently switched with Gail’s. Now, Gail must survive the criminals and have sex with Jon Hamm. The film also stars Thomas Lennon as Remy Fontaine, a famous hairdresser. Jon Hamm plays himself as does John Slattery.
Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass has a lot of comedic gold in the writing. The crazy situations, the satire of Hollywood life and the lampooning of the whole idea of a celebrity sex pass keeps the laughter going throughout the movie. Not only did the wild scenarios make me laugh but part of the fun is the random celebrity appearances, like Weird Al Yankovic or Paul Rudd. One of the funniest sequences in the entire movie is when Weird Al Yankovic aims a shotgun at the entire group and how they all escape. The scenes with the criminals are funny and over the top. Jon Hamm and John Slattery playing versions of themselves is equally hilarious.
The acting is skilled, especially Zoey Deutch and Miles Gutierrez-Riley as Gail and Otto. The pair of them have a fantastic dynamic. Zoey Deutch plays Gail as naive yet intelligent while Otto is definitely smart and savvy as played by Miles Gutierrez-Riley. He is also the sarcastic voice in the room, willing to point out the silliness of the group. Ken Marino is hilarious as Vincent and Ben Wang is equally talented as Caleb. John Slattery leans into the silliness of the film as does Jon Hamm. I love the guest spot by Jennifer Aniston, her comedic talent shining. Sabrina Impacciatore is deranged and crazy as Ludovica, perfect as a criminal mastermind. The entire cast is funny and over the top.
Did I laugh for every second of this movie? Yes, I did. But I will point out that this style of comedy may not be for everyone. The movie is a bit crazy, a lot over the top and while some of the jokes are satirical in nature, a lot more are based on stereotypes or just dumb comedy. If you like a comedy style that is more intelligent, this one might not be for you. I had a blast and really enjoyed the film myself.
If you like crazy, funny, satirical movies, this one might be for you. It makes fun of the whole celebrity sex pass, adds in a wild criminal chase through Hollywood and adds in a dose of silly fun. The cast is talented, allowing for comedic performances that shine especially by Zoey Deutch and Miles Gutierrez-Riley with an additional highlight on John Slattery, Jon Hamm, Ken Marino and Ben Wang. Even the actor playing Tom, Michael Cassidy, is hilarious in this crazy over the top film. I laughed through the entire movie.
