Unpredictable Magic by Faith Hunter has a detailed world, expanding into the universe she’s built with her previous novels in the Jane Yellowrock series. It builds upon the Everhart family and expands the magic of the witches within her world. I like that we get both Angelina’s point of view and Evan’s. Both characters have unique perspectives and I found the investigation aspects as well as the politics kept the story grounded in the Yellowrock universe.
I liked the relationships, the ties between Angie and Evan, as well as their relationship with their aunt Jane. While some of the political aspects dragged, the danger and action kept the story moving. And in the end, the story wraps the consequences up well, leaving the characters in different places than where they started.
If you like the other novels in the universe, I believe you will like this first novel in a new series introducing us to the next generation. The magic is well written and I like the detailed world building, the depth with the characters and the political aspects to their story. While some parts dragged, other elements kept the story moving, especially the action and the ending allows for more novels in the series.
