Nobody 2: Fun Action
When I saw that Universal was making Nobody 2, I wasn’t certain that the film would be able to recreate the same fun as Nobody. It is always hard to recreate that same sense of fun in a second movie. However, after watching the screening for Nobody, it is just as much fun action as the first film with just as many laughs and an incredible cast.
Nobody 2 is a road action comedy film directed by Timo Tjahjanto from a screenplay by Derek Kolstad and Aaron Rabin. It is the sequel to Nobody (2021). In the movie, Hutch (Bob Odenkirk) is a former government assassin who is working off his debt to The Barber (Colin Salmon). His wife Becca (Connie Nielson) and his children, Brady (Gage Munroe) and Sammy (Paisley Cadorath) now know what he does for a living but he is struggling to find time for his family with all his jobs. So he gets the idea to take his family on a nice normal family vacation to a water park that he visited as a kid himself. The family heads off with Hutch’s father David (Chrisopher Lloyd) in tow. When they get to the water park, unfortunately, a fight breaks out between Brady and a local teen Max, son of the corrupt owner of the park, Wyatt Martin (John Ortiz), who is running a bootleg operation for a gang. The sheriff Abel (Colin Hanks) tries to run Hutch out of town and that’s when things go really wrong, bringing in the head of operations Lendina (Sharon Stone) who wants to take out the whole family. With the help of his brother Harry (RZA), Hutch must find a way to defeat an army of bad guys and keep his family safe.
Nobody 2 does not pretend to be anything more than a fun action comedy film and that is the brilliance of it. The comedic elements are in Hutch attempting to have a normal life but his own instincts get in the way. He is protective of his family and also has difficulty walking away from a fight, even when he knows it’s going to lead to more trouble. It is the mishaps and missteps that he takes that makes the movie so funny. He gets in trouble with the sheriff before the fight by accidentally staring at him. He gets thrown into a lake during a fight. The reactions of the men fighting him when they realize he isn’t an ordinary family guy, all of these moments create a hilarious movie.
The action scenes are brilliant. Hutch fights but what I love is how explosive the fights are and how much he uses everyday objects. I also love that he’s reluctant to start the fight but then goes all in. The final battle in the movie is everything you could want, booby traps, guns, explosions and even a sword fight. And we get to see how tough the entire family is as they all join forces to take on Lendina and her crew.
While the movie is an action film, it does have some more emotional moments. We see how much of a toll Hutch’s job is taking on his relationship with his wife and children. He’s missing Brady’s games, he’s not around as much as he should be. Even on vacation, he brings his temper. He is trying to be a good father and husband, however, trying to make things better for his family than his own father could give him. And even though there is conflict, I love how Becca and he address the issues together. While it doesn’t delve deeply into the emotional toll the family deals with, it doesn’t hide those issues either.
Bob Odenkirk is perfect as Hutch, emotionally loving with his family but also tough and able to handle the action and comedy moments well. Connie Nielson is sweet and loving as Becca but also tougher than she appears. The dynamic between her and Odenkirk is loving and the chemistry is believable. Gabe Munroe brings a skilled performance as Brady, learning to navigate being a young adult. Colin Hanks is hilarious as Sheriff Abel working for Lendina. Sharon Stone is crazy but in a funny way as Lendina. John Ortiz gives a great performance as Wyatt, trying to get out of debt and Christopher Lloyd gives his usual brilliant acting. RZA is a nice addition as Harry and does a terrific job in his fight sequence.
The movie is not perfect, it is mostly about action and comedy. But this film blends those key components well. Even though the movie doesn’t go into a lot of depth, it does add to the narrative from the previous film and brings the audience up to speed quickly with what’s going on with the Mansells. What it does do well is bring explosive fun, hilarious comedy scenes, and emotional family moments, along with action off the charts.
If you liked Nobody, you will love Nobody 2. It is as fun as the first movie, adds all the same elements that worked in the first movie, into a family road trip that is hilarious. Bob Odenkirk is funny and skilled at the action sequences. Connie Nielson and the rest of the cast are brilliant. Colin Hanks hams it up in his scenes, stealing the show and Christopher Lloyd is the icing on the cake. If you love action comedy, this is one of the best films, fun action that just doesn’t stop.
