Rebel in the Deep by Katee Robert: Swashbuckling Action

Nox has been steadfastly working for the rebellion for years. They don’t ask for much in return, except for one crucial condition: their ex, the noble Bastian, stays as far away from them as possible. To say things ended poorly between them is an understatement . . . and it’s the only relationship Nox has never quite recovered from.

But now the rules have changed. Siobhan, the rebel leader, has emerged from hiding to tell Nox that Bastian’s been taken captive and the secrets he holds tight are in danger of being revealed. The fate of the entire rebellion now rests on Nox and Siobhan’s ability to rescue Bastian from a Cŵn Annwn ship.

In Rebel in the Deep by Katee Roberts, the story is full of swashbuckling action and steamy love scenes that wraps up her Crimson Sails trilogy with an engaging conclusion. One of the aspects I really liked is that we get the perspectives of all three of the characters, Nox, Bastian and Siobhan as they struggle with the relationship between the three and handle the final stages of the rebellion. That choice allows the reader to get to know all three of the characters and understand them better.

I liked the dilemma that the rebellion faces as they struggle to find a solution that will keep the most people alive. I also love that right from the start we get some fantastic pirate action that utilizes some interesting magic. The story blends pirate rebellion with strong magical characters. The one element that lessened my enjoyment was that the solution and conclusion seemed either too quickly wrapped up or too easy for the main characters. It didn’t feel as emotionally challenged as it could have been. But I still found this a fun novel with lots of great romance between the three leads.

If you like Romantasy with a dash of piracy, I do recommend this novel, especially if you’ve read the first two books in the series. The polyamorous relationship between Nox, Bastian, and Siobhan is truly the heart of the story and that romance is well handled. The conclusion is handled with magic and ties up the storyline well. I really had fun reading the novel.
