In “A Thousand Recipes for Revenge” by Beth Cato, the author has blended the perfect recipe for success with this unique magical system and fantastic story with engaging characters, complex worldbuilding and fun adventure. One of the reasons it is so successful is how quickly it engages with the reader, immersing them in the world and magical systems. The information you need about the magic and about the world is quickly provided by the characters interacting with their world and their circumstances. And there is much to love about both Ada and Solenn.
Both main characters are strong and independent women who are skilled and able to guide their own destinies. Ada has had enough of injustice and wants to forge her own destiny. However, that doesn’t stop her from trying to help her friends when they need her or those who are important to her. Solenn is well aware of the consequences of her actions. As a princess, she is quick to try to solve the problem and even when she isn’t successful, she finds a way to prevail.
Beyond the main characters , the other secondary characters are equally intriguing and engaging as they are used to introduce the readers to the rest of this fascinating world. The details of the magic and epicurea is absolutely unique as a magical system. The magic is exciting and different. While there are some elements that may be familiar, the twists in the design will leave readers fascinated. It is one of the best new fantasies I’ve read in a while and I cannot wait for the second book in the series. My only regret is that it is only a duology.
If you love fantasies with unique magical systems and charismatic characters, I highly recommend “A Thousand Recipes for Revenge.” It is the perfect recipe for success but also for a fantastic read.
